  • Patty and Chase Ahern, WSU Student Intern for V2VSC, made home visits to veterans and took a McLean veteran to Alpha 1 Drop Zone to shop for military memorabilia he is seeking for a special project.

  • Patty and Hutch – Outreach to homeless veterans at United Methodist Open Door (UMOD). Thank you Glenna Fields and Fred Irvin at Open Door for all you do for homeless veterans in our community. 
  • Patty met with Pat Gallagher, Chamber of Commerce, Friends of McConnell and fellow USS Wichita Commissioning Committee Member about a new Advisory Board the Wichita Vet Center is forming.
  • Patty spoke to Lt. Col. Michael George, President of the Wichita Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), leader of the JROTC of USD259 and coordinator of the Annual Wichita Veterans Day Parade about a new Advisory Board the Wichita Vet Center is forming.

  • Hutch and Patty met with a Vet-To-Vet Support Command funder and supporter with program updates.
  • Patty received call from Wayne Day from SEGEL Veterans Transition Center in Pratt, KS, who also attended our January Veteran Providers’ Coalition of Sedgwick County meeting.
  • Patty spoke to a female veteran who is interested in attending our new Women Veterans Monthly Vet-To-Vet Support Command meeting on Feb. 1st at Common Grounds Coffee House.

  • Veteran Providers’ Coalition of Sedgwick County (VPCSC) Meeting with guest speaker Courtney Trear-Rains, LMSW, LMAC, Telehealth Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center.
  • Howard and Patty presented Appreciation Awards, one to Carol Hirsh and another for members of the Wichita Prairie Pilot Club for their outstanding volunteerism and leadership for all they do for VPCSC, Vet-To-Vet Support Command and our veterans!
  • Patty and Hutch were invited as Distinguished Guests to attend the Arrival Ceremony of the new KC-46 Air Refueling Tanker at McConnell AFB.  Dignitaries included Senator Jerry Moran, Senator Pat Roberts, U.S. Congressman Ron Estes, The Secretary of the Air Force, Mayor Jeff Longwell, Sedgwick County Commission Chair David Dennis, Commissioner Jim Howell, members of the USS WICHITA Commissioning Committee and many more.  
    • Patty spoke to Leigh Bellinger, PAO at McConnell AFB, Mayor Jeff Longwell, County Commissioner Jim Howell, Office of Congressman Ron Estes about Hutch’s great idea of featuring the KC-46 and McConnell AFB at our 4th Annual Veterans Awareness Expo on August 3, 2019 at the Mid-America All-Indian Center.

  • Veteran Workgroup Meeting – Continuum of Care (CoC), led by Luella Sanders, United Way.
  • Hutch and Patty met with Victoria, Director of the VA Vet Center downtown, and Brad Gifford, Program Specialist, at their request to assist them in developing a Vet Center Advisory Board. Several ideas emerged for members who Patty and Hutch will approach to consider this opportunity.
  • WSU Student Intern, Chase Ahern, attended S.A.V.E. Suicide Prevention Presentation at the Robert J. Dole VA given by Dr. Jason Deselms, Director of Suicide Prevention at the Robert J. Dole VAMC and Courtney Trear-Rains, Telehealth Suicide Prevention Coordinator.

  • Chase made reminder calls about our Vet-To-Vet Supoort Command meeting and visited on phone with veterans at both Huston Center and McLean Manor.

  • United Methodist Open Door – Outreach to homeless veterans. Patty visited with 4 veterans, gave them bus passes to get to/from the VA or appointments in the community and gave them Hutch’s contact information for follow up as needed.
  • Chase, WSU BSW Intern and Veteran, made calls to veterans at Maple Gardens as a reminder for our Vet-To-Vet Support Command Group meeting and to visit with them.
  • Hutch attended the Wichita Independent Business Association (WIBA) Mixer downtown, as did Mayor Jeff Longwell.

  • Commissioning of the USS WICHITA!  Mayport Naval Base, Jacksonville, Florida.  What a proud moment for all Wichitans, Kansans and Americans to see our USS WICHITA come to life!  What an honor is has been for Howard C. Hutchison, Jr., (Founder of the VPCSC) and I, (Patty Gnefkow) to have served on the USS WICHITA Commissioning Committee for the past 2 years. 
  • USS WICHITA Commissioning Committee hosted the Chairman’s Breakfast for the ship’s sponsor, Kate and Jim Lehrer, dignitaries and special guests attending the Commissioning. 
  • USS WICHITA Commissioning Committee hosted a reception following the ceremony, with guests taking tours of the ship and meeting the crew.

2-6-18  Patty and Sharon Hamric, Vet-To-Vet Support Command Advisory Board Member and volunteer, attended WIBA’s Women’s Leadership Association Luncheon (WIBA – Wichita Independent Business Association), featuring guest speaker Bonnie Bing who Sharon worked with at the Wichita Eagle for many years as reporters and columnists. 

2-5-18  Hutch & Patty:  Briefing to TAPS class members at McConnell AFB Family Readiness Center, giving information about VPCSC, Vet-To-Vet Support Command and community resources.  Over 35 in attendance. 

2-3-18 (Sat.)  Patty & Hutch:  As members of the USS Wichita Commissioning Committee, attended meeting with Chairman Jeff Penfield, Ward Cook, Sedgwick County Commissioner David Dennis, Sharon Hamric and fellow committee members.  Commissioning is expected in Spring, 2019. 

2-2-18  Hutch & Patty: Luncheon meeting with Veteran Engagement Team members at Johnson Controls (JCI) to get Vet-To-Vet Support Command monthly social groups started at JCI, who is a member of VPCSC.  Hutch and Patty familiarized them with V2VSC and VPCSC and learned about their Business Resource Group (BRG).  They are interested in monthly luncheons, beginning with “Lunch & Learn” meetings.

  • Hutch & Patty fielded call about elderly veteran in need of additional care and how to access VA services.  
  • EXPO – (Sharon) research on VFW, American Legion and veteran related organizations in Kansas, south of Topeka.  Patty & Sharon spoke to James Denison for additional info, then called Debbie Q. from State of Kansas VFW in Topeka.
  • Contacted Kristen at Museum of World Treasures, re: planning for March 7th V2VSC event. 
  • Met with Susan Bursch at Amedysis Home Health & Hospice – VPCSC meeting, veteran outreach to their clients, 
  • Call regarding V2VSC veteran at homeless shelter who is moving into the community. 
  • Followed up with veteran in need in El Dorado who is receiving help from the Salvation ARmy SSVF after our referral.  The American Legion Post 81 is also providing assistance for veteran and veteran father to get to and from VA appointments, thank you Post Commander Steve Seymour.

  • Patty – Received call from veteran in St. Francis Via Christi hospital who was referred to us by their Social Worker.  Veteran has nowhere to go when discharged.  Referred him to VA HUD-VASH, placed calls to VA. Followed up with veteran who was placed in homeless shelter for veterans. 
  • Conference call with Hutch, Patty, Chip Neumann (Midwest Battle Buddies), Jamie Wohlgemuth (Cloud 9) and Guad Gonzales and Richard from new Wichita Punishers Motorcycle Club (Law Enforcement / First Responders).

1-13-18  (Sat.) Jamie Wohlgemuth, President of Cloud 9 Therapeutic Equine, V2VSC Advisory Board Member and VPCSC Planning Committee Member, attended 8-Hour Mental Health First Aid Class, taught by Jason Scheck and Tom Pletcher at the Spiritual Life Center.

Patty & Hutch:  Hosted Vet-To-Vet Support Command Social Support Group at Grasslands Estates with guests Brad Gifford from the Wichita Vet Center and Dan and Jessica from the Wichita VA Regional Office.  

1-11-18  Patty assisted veteran in need and his terminally ill father who live in El Dorado with referrals to SAlvation Army SSVF, (PG contacted Aaron Lovelady and Director, Brandi Niblett) and spoke to American Legion Post Commander 81 Steve Seymour in El Dorado for any assistance they may be able to help with.  Patty also put veteran in touch with DAV transportation for rides to and from VA for his Father’s VA doctor appointments.

Hutch & Patty:  Took guests Sarah Sell, Director of Veteran Student Services at WSU and Shukura Bakari-Cozart, Director of Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) at WSU to monthly Wichita Independent Business Association (WIBA) luncheon.  Guest speakers were Dr. Rick Muma, Interim Provost at WSU and Dr. Sheree Utash, President of Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) with presentation on WATC becoming WSU Tech.  

Hutch, Patty & WSU Intern Sharon, attended Continuum of Care (CoC) meeting at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, led by Chair, Luella Sanders from the United Way of the Plains.  Approximately 35 community leaders and representatives from local organizations working on homelessness.  

1-8-18  Hutch & Patty: CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) meeting at COMCARE. Also in attendance were Esther Granados, Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the VA and Karen Dodson, Justice Outreach Coordinator at the VA.

12-21-17  Patty & Hutch hosted a Vet-To-Vet SC holiday breakfast at Kelly’s Family Diner for veteran members from Huston Estates.  Everyone had a great time!   

12-20-17  Hutch attended the “Greater Wichita Veterans Advocacy Board” sub-committee for veterans’ employement at Fairmont Coffee Shop, led by John Buckley, Co-Chair of the SWVAB & Military Relations Manager at Koch Industries.  It was well attended by community leaders invested in veterans’ outcomes. 

Patty: 

  • Delivered Christmas cards to many veteran members of Vet-To-Vet SC at several locations, including residents at Greenway Manor, Maple Gardens and Georgetown Village. 
  • Delivered Christmas card to Jeremy Barker, proprietor of Two Brothers BBQ & Culinary Catering, on e of our sponsors.  
  • Called a funder with program updates. 
  • Delivered Christmas cards to employees at First UMC for all of their help throughout the year for our VPCSC meetings. 

12-19-17  Hutch attended WIBA’s mixer at Hotel Old Town and as a member of the Government Affairs Committee tries to attend all WIBA events, representing VPCSC and Vet-To-Vet SC.  

12-18-17  Vet-To-Vet Support Command hosted a holiday party for veteran members at McLean Manor who were adopted by members of the “Ages Program” and Via Christi employees through our “Adopt-A-Vet for the Holidays” program.  Everyone had a great time!  Thank you to Susan Bursch, Volunteer Coordinator at Amedysis Hospice and member of VPCSC for coordinating this event for our veterans. 

12-17-17  (Sunday)  Hutch attended Team RWB’s Holiday Party, at Old Chicago with about 20 members, coordinated by leaders Matt Kiddoo and Mike Obermeyer. 

12-15-17   Annual Veteran Providers’ Coalition of Sedgwick County Holiday Luncheon, sponsored this year by Kansas AARP & catered by Jeremy Barker’s Culinary Catering…thank you Kansas AARP Director Ernie Kutzley and guest speakers, veterans and AARP volunteers Dr. John and Judy Bellome.  We had 70 in attendance, with 30 Veterans receiving an AARP Military Recognition Coin.  Additionally, four of our five Sedgwick County Commissioners were in attendance:  Chairman David Unruh, Commissioner Jim Howell, Commissioner Dave Dennis and Commissioner Michael O’Donnell. 

12-14-17  Patty & Hutch hosted monthly Vet-To-Vet Support Command Veterans’ Social Group at Maple Gardens, with Dan and Jessica from the Wichita VA Regional Office presenting information about VA benefits and visiting one-on-one with veterans concerning their claims and questions.

  • Outreach meeting with Wichita VA Regional Office staff members, Director Karen Townsend, Supervisor Debbie Fleet and Coordinator Tara Cisneros about upcoming outreach opportunities to collaborate in helping veterans.
  • Annual Continuum of Care (CoC) meeting at Cowtown Museum, led by Chairman Luella Sanders from the United Way.

12-11-17   TAPS class at McConnell – Hutch & Patty debriefing to airmen preparing to separate from the military over the next few months, offering insight and information about veteran related resources, VPCSC & V2VSC. 

12-9-17  (Sat.)  Hutch and Patty were recently invited to be members of the USS Wichita Commissioning Committee for new Naval Ship and participated in their monthly conference call.  Sharon Hamric, U.S. Navy Captain (Ret.) Veteran and volunteer for VPCSC & V2VSC is also a member of this Commissioning Committee and organized the crew’s visit to Wichita last summer. 

Patty & Hutch represented and provided information tables for VPCSC & V2VSC at the Suicide Prevention Summit at WATC, coordinated by Chip Neumann, President of Midwest Battle Buddies.  Jamie & Jason Wohlgemuth from Cloud 9 Therapeutic Equine, Regina & Brandi from the VA Regional Office and a representative from Comcare also provided information tables.  The event was well attended and presenter Esther Granados, new Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the VA did a great job. 

Hutch & Patty attended the SCBRC Annual Awards Banquet, led by Veteran Chairman Joseph Elmore and Vice President Kenya Cox.  Hutch has been the SCBRC Parliamentarian for over 8 years and Patty has been their Secretary for 3 years.  

12-8-17  Hutch & Patty attended Suicide Prevention Coalition of Sedgwick County.  Co-briefed with Esther Granados, Suicide Prevention Coordinator at the VA, about tomorrow’s Suicide Prevention Summit being coordinated by Chip Neumann, President of Midwest Battle Buddies.

11-30-17  Patty – Hosted an end of the semester Vet-To-Vet Support Command “Thank You to our Veterans” attending WSU during pre-finals week with donuts at their Vet Center on campus.  Thank you Sarah Sell, Director of Student Veteran & Military Services at WSU for her continued support of V2VSC & VPCSC.

Hutch & Patty – Scheduled call from David Brodwell, Wounded Warrior Fellow working in Congressman Ron Estes’ office in Washington D.C. as he wanted to learn about the Veteran Providers’ Coalition of Sedgwick County.  He was impressed with our mission, model and outreach, saying it should be replicated not only throughout Kansas but the entire country! 

11-18-17  (Sat.)  Hutch & Patty, along with other VPCSC members, attended Alpha 1 Drop Zone’s Veteran Appreciation Concert at the Cotillion, coordinated by Steve Gonzales, VP of Marketing and Community Relations at A1DZ, to support Cloud 9 Therapeutic Equine, led by Jason & Jamie Wohlgemuth. 

11-17-17  Monthly VPCSC luncheon meeting with guest speaker Raymond Miller, U.S. Marine Corps Korean War Hero.   Thank you to VPCSC Planning Committee Member Steve Gonzales, VP for Marketing & Community Relations at A1DZ, for organizing our guest speaker.

11-16-17  Hutch & Patty hosted Vet-To-Vet Support Command Social Support Group at Huston Center with WSU Student Intern Sharon co-leading, providing helpful information to veteran members.  Group members suggested we have our group meeting for breakfast at Kelly’s Family Diner in December, which was agreed upon by all.

11-11-17  (Sat.)  Hutch and Patty:  Veterans Day Parade!  Patty transported veterans to/from parade and drove pick-up truck with new Veteran Providers’ Coalition of Sedgwick County and Vet-To-Vet Support Command large magnets on the side of the truck while two V2VSC volunteers carried our new banner!  *Also joining VPCSC in the parade were MIDWEST BATTLE BUDDIES, CLOUD 9 THERAPEUTIC EQUINE, VETERANS UPWARD BOUND AND WSU SERVICE VETERAN ORGANIZATION.  Many other VPCSC member organizations also marched in the parade throughout the route.

Hutch, Steve Gonzales, VP Marketing and Community Relations of Alpha 1 Drop Zone (A1DZ) met with Ernest Kutzley, Director of Kansas AARP in Topeka, KS to discuss his interest in Kansas AARP sponsoring a VPCSC luncheon.  Meeting was held at A1DZ and resulted in the proposition that Kansas AARP consider sponsoring our VPCSC December 15 Holiday Luncheon and providing guest speakers.

Patty transported spouse of a Vet-To-Vet Support Command WWII Veteran from Maple Gardens to the Wichita Eisenhower airport to welcome and meet Kansas Honor Flight Home from Washington D.C.   It was with great pride and joy to also greet their son home as he accompanied his father on the flight as his companion.  Thank you Kansas Honor Flight, a committed member of the VPCSC.

  • Visited two veterans, one who is recuperating from injuries; picked up shower chair that Vet-To-Vet Support Command secured / borrowed for minimal fee from the Medical Loan Closet to return it so someone else to benefit from using now that our veteran is on the mend and does not need it anymore.

  • Continuum of Care (CoC) meeting at United Way – Presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Luella Sanders, Director of Community Impact at the United Way of the Plains from the Veteran Providers’ Coalition of Sedgwick County and Vet-To-Vet Support Command.  Pat Hanrahan, Executive Director of the United Way and approximately 30 non-profits were in attendance.  Thank you Howard Hutchison for heading this outstanding recognition for Luella, which is well deserved.
